Become a Gig Buddy Volunteer

We’re always looking for friendly, reliable volunteers to buddy up with someone with a learning disability and/or an autistic person.

Ready to make a difference and have fun doing it?

Volunteering with Gig Buddies means being matched with someone with a learning disability and/or an autistic person to enjoy gigs, events, and nights out together. It’s all about building real friendships, sharing good times, and helping someone feel more connected. If you’re friendly, reliable, and up for a monthly outing, we’d love to hear from you!

We currently need volunteers across Sussex, including:
Worthing, Brighton & Hove, Newhaven, Burgess Hill, Lewes and surrounding areas if you are willing to travel.

Volunteering info:

  • Meet up with your buddy roughly once a month to attend a gig or social event together.
  • Help choose what to do and make practical arrangements (like transport).
  • Build a meaningful friendship based on shared interests and mutual respect.

You don’t need any specific experience—just the right attitude.

  • Friendly, reliable, flexible and have up for a good time.
  • Able to commit to one training day and regular monthly meet-ups.
  • Supportive of our mission to help people with learning disabilities lead full social lives.
  • Willing to buddy up for at least one year, to give the friendship time to grow.

Yes. All volunteers take part in training that covers topics like learning disability awareness, communication, safeguarding, and possible scenarios. We also carry out DBS checks and ask for two references to ensure everyone’s safety and wellbeing.

We meet with all participants and volunteers to get to know their interests, preferences, and personalities. From there, we thoughtfully match people to ensure a good fit. Once matched, we introduce you and support your first meet-up.

We recommend meeting at least once a month. We also organise regular social events where all buddies can get together, share experiences, and build a wider community.

How to get started

  1. Apply online – Fill in the application form below. If we’re not currently recruiting in your area, we’ll keep your details and be in touch.

  3. Complete checks – You’ll need to provide references and complete a DBS check.

  4. Attend training – Join one of our training days to get ready for buddying.
