Coronavirus update for all Gig Buddies volunteers

Dear Gig Buddy Volunteers,

Following government advise last night on the 16th March,  around the coronavirus outbreak, we have decided to suspend all Gig Buddying activities until further notice.

This means that we will not be running any socials (including our Gig Buddies 7th birthday party scheduled for the 24th March) and we are advising you not to continue your 1:1 buddying at the moment.

We realise this could have a huge impact on the people we support, and your gig buddy participant. It is causing a lot of anxiety as to how long this may continue and we are aware we cannot give an answer for this.

However we have some ideas about how you can help you gig buddy stay connected and avoid feeling even more isolated.

How to help your gig buddy stay connected

Please call you gig buddy more regularly and check in with them. You could also text them, or send them letters. You can still claim expenses for this.

We do not expect you to do anything beyond your role of gig buddying – such as shopping for them – but if you are worried about their welfare, or you feel they are at risk from not having enough support, please get in touch their emergency contact or with us.

They may need you to explain why we have made this decision. It is hard for many of us to understand if we feel healthy and well and still want to go out, but it is for the wider social impact. Brighton Dome and Concorde 2 have closed as of today and the government have advised us to avoid restaurants, bars and clubs where many of our activities take place. Your safety is our key priority.

We are in the process of planning online social meet ups as well as virtual open mic performances, quizzes and online hangouts, and will send you details of these soon.

Our office

We are closing our office as of today 17th March, as a precautionary measure to protect our staff team, 4 of which have a learning disability and some have associated health conditions meaning they are in a higher risk category. However, one of us will come in weekly to check the post for expenses, and check the phone messages.

Contacting the team

The best way to contact us for now is through our usual phone or email channels and if in doubt email info@stayuplate.org and Paul will pass it on to the appropriate team member.

We will keep posting updates on our gig buddies website to let you know what we are doing as things change.

We wish you all well in this challenging time and thank you again for supporting our project,

Best wishes ,  The Gig Buddies team and Stay Up late
