Our trip to Butlins for the 70s weekend – by Daniel Randall-Nason
Gig Buddies Daniel and Darren recently returned from the 70s weekend at Butlins where they had an incredible time together. The weekend wasn’t just about live music; it was also about inclusion, accessibility, and making memories. From enjoying the fairground rides to navigating the challenges of accessibility at their chalet, Daniel and Darren made the most of every moment. At Gig Buddies, we’re all about supporting adults with learning disabilities to live life to the fullest—and this trip was a perfect example of that. Read on to hear what Daniel had to say about his weekend.

Me and Darren went to Butlins again this year for the 70s weekend.
There were lots of great bands to see but we did other things as well. The funfair was open and we went on the dodgems and we also went on the fairground ride. I tried to get on one of the horses but couldn’t get my leg over the saddle so we went in the chariot instead. I’m determined to go on the horse next year though. There was a horse called Sophie!
We went in the pool again and went sliding down the rapids – although I lost my goggles. Oh dear!
The bands we saw were the Glitter Band who were good, the Bay City Rollers who were good but I felt sorry for them as they had all their equipment stolen the night before and had to borrow some.
Slade are my heroes but unfortunately Dave Hill was ill so they couldn’t play this year. They are on next year though so we’ll get to see them then.
There were big queues for Leo Sayer but we all managed to fit in. Racey were another band I liked, especially when they sang Some Girls Do.

The chalet at Butlins was good again except for the step to the shower cubicle which is always really high. Darren ordered a plastic step off Amazon for me this year so I could get in and out more easily.
The food was better this year. They have improved it and it was nice and hot.
I took Mr Cow and he enjoyed it and me and Darren had a really good time.
I enjoyed meeting some of Darren’s friends – Paul and Cheryl and Sharon and Jane and Richard. We can’t wait to go again next year.
